Your child might not use words. But they are still talking! They use their eyes. They use their hands. They use their body. This is non-verbal communication. Pay close attention. What do their faces tell you? What do their movements mean? Maybe they point. Maybe they lead you to what they want. Learn to read their signs. Understand their gestures. This is how they share their world with you. It’s important to listen with your eyes and heart.
Words can be hard. So use pictures. Show a picture of a drink when you offer one. Show a picture of a toy they can play with. This is a visual schedule. It helps them understand. Use actions too. If you say “come here,” wave your hand. Be very consistent. Do the same thing every time. Give them time to answer. This is called wait time. Don’t rush them. Play with them. Play helps communication. Use music. Use songs. Keep it fun and easy.
You are a great parent. But sometimes you need more help. A speech therapist can do wonders. They are experts. They can teach you new ways to talk. They can help your child use special tools. These tools are called AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication). It might be an app or a picture board. Every small step is a big win. Celebrate when your child points! Celebrate when they look at you! Be patient. Be your child’s biggest advocate. Never stop trying to connect. Your child is worth it.
