10 Early Signs Your Child May Need Special Education

  1. Speech Delays.
Does your child talk less than other kids their age? Do they use very few words? Or do they not make sounds like other children? This is an early sign of communication issues.
  2. Social Problems.
Your child might not look at you in the eyes. They might play alone a lot. They might not seem interested in other kids. This is about social interaction and social skills.
  3. Repetitive Actions (Stimming).
Does your child do the same thing over and over? Like flapping their hands? Or rocking their body? This is often called stimming. It can be a sign.
  4. Sensory Issues.
Some kids react too much to sounds, lights, or how things feel. Loud noises might really bother them. Or they might not react enough. This is about sensory processing.
  5. Hard to Follow Directions.
Do simple instructions confuse your child? Do they struggle to do what you ask? This can be a sign they need extra support in learning.
  6. Big Motor Challenges.
Watch how your child moves. Are they very clumsy? Do they fall a lot? Is it hard for them to run, jump, or climb? These are gross motor skills.
  7. Small Motor Challenges.
Does your child struggle with small hand tasks? Like holding a crayon or using scissors? Or buttoning a shirt? These are fine motor skills.
  8. Learning Difficulties.
Your child might have trouble learning colors, shapes, numbers, or letters. They might not understand things as quickly as other kids their age. This is a learning challenge.
  9. Big Feelings and Tantrums.
Does your child get very angry or upset often? Are their tantrums much bigger or longer than other kids? Is it hard for them to calm down? This is about emotional regulation.
  10. Losing Old Skills (Regression).
Did your child used to do something, like talk or use the toilet, and now they don’t? When a child loses skills they once had, it’s a very important sign to notice.
